Bicycling in Indonesia

Bicycling in Indonesia

Think your city has bad traffic jams?  I would guess that many cities don’t have traffic jams like those you’ll find in Jakarta, Indonesia.  To that end, the city of Jakarta has started developing a huge Bike to Work community that exceeds 50,000 members.  There is also a bi-monthly cyclovia to give cyclists a break from the traffic and encourage riding.  Although there are safety concerns about riding in the crowded Jarkarta streets, there is still strong support for cycling that looks like it will continue to grow.  Check it out.

Bike Move in Bozeman

I found this video while perusing YouTube.  It’s a classic bike move movie and a lot of fun to watch.  Cargo bikes are definitely capable of hauling a lot, including a couch!  I’ve never participated in a bike move, but it would be fun to try.  Have you ever done a bike move or helped with one?

BICAS Refugee Program

BICAS (Bicycle Inter-Community Action & Salvage) is an amazing organization in Tucson, Arizona, that has been helping get under-served populations like the homeless or refugees or really anyone who is in need of a bicycle for transportation get access to bikes, parts, tools, and help for a number of years.  This video, which I saw posted over at the Tucson Bike Lawyer, highlights the BICAS Refugee Program.  To learn more about BICAS and other similar organizations like the Bike Church, check out a previous post I did on Bike Salvage and Recycling Organizations.

Bikeways in Bogota

The city of Bogotá, Colombia, is very famous for their amazing Cyclovia’s, which happen on a weekly basis.  However, they are still improving the city for cyclists by creating a more permanent sense of Cyclovia through their extensive bikeway system, which you can see in the film here from Streetfilms.  One of the most important aspects of their bikeway system is that it doesn’t just serve the upper and middle class neighborhoods but also focuses on the poorer neighborhoods, since cycling is a great transportation option for people with all levels of income.  To add to that, the city considers the transportation needs of all cyclists as equal to those of motorists.  Very cool!

No “Ridiculous” Car Trips Campaign

No “Ridiculous” Car Trips Campaign

In the Malmo, Sweden, there is an ongoing campaign to try to get more people to give up the car in favor of a bicycle, especially for shorter trips.  There are many such campaigns going on around the world, which is certainly a step in the right direction.  In Sweden however, I especially like their approach.  They are asking people to give up “ridiculous” car trips, which are considered to be very short car trips.  I like the use of the word ridiculous.  It’s not too harsh, but points out the absurdity of very short car trips.  What do you think?

Dutch Extreme Bike Commuting

Ted over at Commute by Bike was recently reminded that there are many additional uses for a bicycle beyond the realm of transportation and utility cycling.  Take Danny MacAskill, for example, whose use of a bicycle falls somewhere between extreme sports, art, and self expression.  Well, Ted was inspired by MacAskill type riding (ie. trials and/or BMX) to come up with an EXTREME COMMUTING video to amp up the fun factor in his daily commute.  Interestingly, the Dutch Cycling Federation recently came out with a new advertisement that I would definitely characterize as “extreme commuting”.  I think the advertisement is awesome.  Gee, what fun bike commuting looks!  So enjoy a little extreme bike commuting this Friday and have a good weekend.

Gabri Christa’s NYC Biking Story

The latest NYC Biking Story from Streetfilms profiles Gabri Christa, whose daily commute from Staten Island to New York City is a perfect opportunity to catch up with friends and experience the city in new, fresh ways all of the time.  I’ve really been enjoying these NYC Biking Stories from Streetfilms, as they help to show that people from all walks of life can be drawn to the bicycle for transportation.  It’s not just for the hardcore, sporty types, but it’s really a mode of transportation that can be enjoyed by many.

Nice Ride Minnesota

Bike sharing systems are rapidly expanding to cities around the world from Hangzhou, China, to Minneapolis/ St. Paul to Boulder, CO, and beyond.  Bike shares are short-term bike rentals that are available to the public for temporary use.  In Minnesota, the Nice Ride MN bike share recently celebrated its one-year anniversary and has been a huge success.  Streetfilms recently did a feature on the Nice Ride, and it’s well worth a look.

Cargo Delivery by Bicycle in Chicago

We often discuss the endless potential for bike delivery using a variety of methods, including cargo bicycles, here at Utility Cycling.  And it is always fun to see this in action.  The video below highlights Brandon, a semi-truck driver and bicycle rider who decided to combine his two interests into one by starting up a bicycle cargo delivery service in the Chicago area called Chicago Cargo.  Brandon delivers his cargo on a Bullitt cargo bike via the Zipments courier company and independently from his own business.  Way to go, Brandon!
