Are Bike Lanes Safer?

This video, which is the winner of the Bike Shorts bike film series being shown in Brooklyn, NYC, debates whether or not a new bike lane is actually safer. The video brings up some interesting issues associated with bike lanes – for example, being used as parking by delivery trucks – to show that, in the case of the bike lane being examined, it is probably not safer than riding with traffic. In general, the video raises some interesting questions about what makes for “safer” cycling in an urban environment and what the challenges are to urban cyclists.

Bicycle Thesis at Pratt Institute

The following video documents the Master’s work of Camden Moore, a graduate student in the Environmental Systems Management Program at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Her work is concerned with bicycle infrastructure on campus and good bike planning. It’s great to see graduate students working on bicycle issues. Hopefully that means that there is a trend of more and more professionals and academics doing research concerned with bicycle related issues, as well. Enjoy!

Cargo Bikes in Copenhagen

Streetfilms has another great film dedicated to the versatile machine that is the cargo bike. The focus of the film is on the use of cargo bikes in Copenhagen, where cargo bikes are totally commonplace. They are so commonplace in fact, that the video shows tons of people cruising around comfortably in their cargo bikes. And perhaps my favorite piece of the video is the father carrying five children in his cargo bike and bike trailer set up. Enjoy!

The Social Bicycle System

Bike sharing is hitting the States in a big way, with automated systems popping up all over the country as well as new innovative people-managed bike share programs being developed and implemented. In this video, Ryan Rzepecki explains his new concept, the Social Bicycle system. While the venture is still in the testing stage in NYC, it is a very interesting idea in the ever-expanding world of bike share.

Female Cyclists Weigh In

Streetfilms has a new short film about female cyclists who have recently taken up cycling for transportation in the New York City area. The film is well worth the watch if you are considering taking up bike commuting, as the women that are interviewed share some very good insights, tips, and thoughts. Hopefully these ladies provide some inspiration for you to hop on the bike and give utility cycling a try!

This video by Streetfilms tells an amazing story of a the implementation and construction of a bike path having a very profound effect on a place. In Prospect Park West in New York City, a car lane devoted to traffic was converted into a two-way bike path, and the results are truly incredible. Watch on to learn more.

Overcoming Your Fears of Cycling

Below is a great film from San Francisco by Laura Lukitsch about overcoming ones fears of commuting by bicycle. In the film, people are asked about how they started commuting by bike, what they were most afraid of, and how they worked to overcome those fears. I recommend the film for both newbies and seasoned bike commuting vets, as there are some good anecdotes and advice. Enjoy!

Portland and the Bicycle Economy

Produced by the New York Times, this video is a few years old but offers a very insightful look into all of the elements that have led Portland to become one of the (if not the) most bike-friendly cities in the United States as well as how Portland has built a “bicycle economy” around its beloved method of transportation, recreation and culture.
