Here is a video and a song to start your Wednesday off right. Not really utility cycling-specific, but certainly utility cycling-inspired.

Enjoy.

I posted a video a few weeks ago about Sue Abbott, an Australian woman who was fighting a fine for not wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle.  Here is the follow-up video of Sue’s court case by documentarist Mike Rubbo.

Utility Cycling Meets Sport Cycling…Sorta

It’s not often that Utility Cycling meets bike racing (aka sport cycling), but these two examples are all about fun, friendly, good-natured competition.

And remember folks, even if you are a bike racer, try not to take yourself too seriously. These fellows are a good example. Perhaps the first Madsen to ever enter a cyclocross race.

Have a great weekend!

Check out the latest commuting/cargo trailer from Burley.  The Burley Travoy Bike Commuting Trailer was unveiled at the Interbike trade show in Las Vegas last month.  The trailer will be available sometime in early 2010.  Check back for a review here sometime soon, as I hope to get my hands on one to test it out.  It looks to be a really nice, compact, and easy-to-use trailer.

Check out this great montage of a cycling adventure through South America.  It looks like an epic adventure, and it’s for a good cause.  If you are inspired, head on over to Ride for the Trees and donate in support of forest conservation in Paraguay.

Found this video over at DC.

Lego PSA Video

Hey there UtilityCycling.org readers, I apologize for the post-Interbike interlude.  No, Vegas wasn’t that much fun, and I do assure you that some exciting utility cycling oriented Interbike posts will be up in the not-so-distant future.  But the main reason for my absence is a pesky little MA thesis that I am submitting next week, which has had the effect of taking over my life temporarily.

I will get a good post up soon, but in the meantime, please enjoy this fun little PSA video about bicycle safety.  It’s a nice change from the more graphic ones that have been making their way around the Interwebs as of late.

Thanks to Cyclelicio.us, where I first saw the video.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Specialized Ride to Interbike

I unsuspectingly stumbled upon this video in a search for Interbike-related videos on YouTube.

The utility of this can definitely be defined as cycling for a cause, which we see as being one important aspect of utility cyclingSpecialized Bikes is hosting a ride from Specialized Headquarters in Morgan Hill, CA, to Las Vegas, NV, for the 2009 Interbike trade show in support of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, which raises a great deal of money each year to fight breast cancer.

According to Specialized, this is what the ride is all about:

In an effort to gain awareness in the fight against breast cancer and Susan G. Komen for the Cure ®, Specialized President – Mike Sinyard, staff, dealers, Phil Keoghan – host of The Amazing Race and journalists will ride 660 miles from Morgan Hill, CA to the Las Vegas Interbike show. Starting September 17 at 7 a.m., Sinyard and company will ride between 100 and 150 miles a day on a challenging course that winds over Mt. Hamilton and Tioga Pass and through Death Valley before reaching Vegas on Sept. 22.

Specialized has partnered with Komen for the Cure since 2007 and has donated more than $450,000 to aid in the fight against breast cancer. As part of a continuing commitment to Komen, Specialized will be contributing $400,000 to the organization in 2010 through the sale of limited edition Susan G. Komen for the Cure products. Living a healthy lifestyle and staying active is important because it may lower your risk for breast cancer. Specialized encourages women to do just that, and were grateful for their continued support of our promise to end breast cancer forever. said Katrina McGhee, vice president of global partnerships.

Even in these times when charity donations are down, Specialized donated over $1M to cycling-related causes and charities over the past twelve months. For the coming years Specialized Bicycles has pledged $1.4M in global contributions to in the following areas:
1- Promoting access to and sustainability of trails for mountain bikes
2- Increasing the amount of cycling pathways and safety of shared-use roads for pavement riders
3- Putting more kids on bikes as a way towards better health
4- Supporting general health and wellness through the promotion of cycling for everyone

Not only is this cycling for a cause, but they are riding to Interbike! Hey, that’s a great idea, why didn’t I think of that? I’m driving there tomorrow, but fortunately not today, since today is World Carfree Day!

And I must admit, I’m a fan of Specialized Bikes, especially their Designs for Women.  And yes, I do have the pink-tipped Ruby saddle.
