Streetfilm Maps Out a NYC Bike Commute
Posted on 20. Oct, 2010 by Melanie Colavito.
Clarence Eckerson Jr., the Director of Video Productions at Streetfilms, recently made a video that details his 11 mile commute through parts of New York to downtown Manhattan where he works. The video is really cool, as he analyzes each piece of the commute and totals up the results of the bike facilities he uses at the end of the video. I haven’t been to New York in a few years, but it sounds like some incredible changes are happening there. Enjoy!

CicLAvia

Major props to the city of Los Angeles for the recent CicLAvia event. I was excited and impressed when Tucson closed down the streets for the Tucson Cyclovia event, and it’s absolutely incredible to watch the video below via Streetfilms of LA closing down 9 miles of city streets for the first CicLAvia event. Enjoy! And here’s to many more successful CicLAvia’s and Cyclovia’s in general!

Can Bike Shares Survive in a Land with Mandatory Bike Helmet Laws?
Posted on 16. Oct, 2010 by Josh Lipton.
This video bring together the two controversial topics of bike helmet laws and bike sharing programs. These issues surrounding these topics collide (apologies for the pun) with the Melbourne Cycle Share Program. This video explores the results tossing around a variety of statistics. It’s my belief that the only appropriate mandate of helmet laws would a coupling of these laws with a very robust government support of cycling. If the government is going to put dampers on the personal freedoms of cycling and how people choose to do it, they should offset the down side of this by investing heavily in cycling infrastructure and making it as easy as possible for everyone to get a helmet.

People Focused Streets
Posted on 13. Oct, 2010 by Melanie Colavito.
This video is part of a series called “Cities in Focus”, which documents innovations in cities around the world that are doing more to move people, rather than automobiles, around the landscape. The city documented in this video is New York City, which has been very popular as of late for all of its efforts in bike planning. The video shows some of NYC’s great bike innovations, as well as other things the city is doing to make it a more people-friendly place.

Capital Bikeshare Launch
Posted on 12. Oct, 2010 by Stacey Moses.
In Washington, DC and Arlington, VA, the Capital Bikeshare program now gives residents and visitors access to 1,100 bikes at more than 110 self-serve outdoor stations. Annual, monthly and daily subscriptions are available, and the first 30 minutes of riding are included in the price of the membership. The program is aimed at travelers needing to move from point A to point B, and the stations have been strategically placed near metros, trails and other high traffic areas. It’s an amazing step forward in making utility cycling more accessible in the nation’s capital.

A Car Free Street in Queens
Posted on 05. Oct, 2010 by Melanie Colavito.
Streetfilms has a new film about a street in Queens, NY, that is closed during the summer and serves as a community park, a space for children to play, for neighbors to interact, and for people to generally spend time together outside. Although this doesn’t focus on utility cycling specifically, stories like these are very important, as they help to emphasize the significance and power of conceptualizing public space different in a way that doesn’t hinge entirely on the automobile. Enjoy.

Here is the latest installment of the Ditch the Van Bike Tour, which I have been following over the last month or so. Ben Sollee and his crew of long distance utility cyclists make their way through Colorado and on to Washington D.C. (via train), all the while playing some great music, in Chapters 7 through 9 below. Enjoy!

This recent film from Streetfilms documents some useful techniques for developing shared space that is comfortable and convenient for many types of road users. The examples from London provide some interesting possibilities for balancing the needs of different road users without compromising much on the part of any one user.

Riding Bikes with the Dutch
Posted on 28. Sep, 2010 by Melanie Colavito.
The most recent movie trailer for Riding Bikes with the Dutch has been posted over at Everyday Bike. The folks over at Everyday Bike did a one year exchange in the fall of 2007 with a couple from Amsterdam. When they returned home, they discovered that their home in the U.S. had a lot of potential for the great cycling experience they had abroad. While you can only watch the trailer online, the full version is now available.
We also posted one of the earlier trailers up a year or so ago. Enjoy!
