Carbon Credits for Bike Sharing
Posted on 07. Dec, 2010 by Melanie Colavito.
The folks over at Treehugger recently interviewed Jason Meinzer of City Ryde about how the company is trying to generate more income for bike sharing systems in the U.S. Meinzer argues that bike sharing systems are not successful in the U.S., since they don’t generate enough revenue. CityRyde’s new software program Inspire is working to change that by tracking bike sharing use and generating carbon credits from each ride, which subsequently turn into revenue.
It’s a pretty neat idea, and I’m curious as to whether or not it could actually improve the outlook for bike sharing in the U.S. It still doesn’t get people out of their cars and onto a bike if they aren’t already inclined to do so. What do you think?

New York City Bike Wars
Posted on 02. Dec, 2010 by Melanie Colavito.
This new video from EcoMobilityTV follows some of the debate around the recent increase in the numbers of bike commuters in New York City. While many are thrilled by all of the new cycling infrastructure, and the large numbers of new bike commuters, not everybody is happy. This video shows some of the debate on the topic from the perspective of drivers and cyclists, alike. It seems to be representative of how people in many cities feel.

The History of Dutch Bike Paths
Posted on 22. Nov, 2010 by Melanie Colavito.
This interesting little video documents the history of separated bicycle infrastructure in the Netherlands. Of course, the Dutch are famous for bicycling, but it is fascinating to learn how their current infrastructure has evolved over the last few hundred years. In contrast, the history of the roads in the United States is vastly different, although it is notable that in both cases, bicycles definitely predated automobiles to some extent or another. Anyhow, enjoy this fun little piece of history.

Using a Bike Trailer to Transport eBikes
Posted on 18. Nov, 2010 by Melanie Colavito.
Now this is a utility cycling video! The New Wheel in San Fransisco did a demo of their electric bikes in the Golden Gate Park, and they transported the bikes there on a bike trailer. To be specific, a Wandertec Bongo bike trailer. Anyhow, I thought that was a very cool concept and definitely one that warrants some attention here at UtilityCycling.org! Enjoy.

In the Alternative Travel Project two actors, Stana Katic and Seamus Deaver, are giving up their cars for 7 days to explore more healthy and environmentally conscious ways of getting around. In the video below, they are spending the day riding bicycles. In other videos, they explore public transit and other options. As you can see, both actors look exhilarated and happy to be riding their bikes. Want to feel that way too? Give a try! Thanks to Cyclelicio.us for the post.

Posted on 15. Nov, 2010 by Melanie Colavito.
It is no surprise that there are some major bike innovations occurring in the city of Portland, Oregon, as Portland is well known throughout the U.S. and the world for being a great cycling city. To that end, this recent video from Streetfilms documents the new bike boulevard development that is happening in Portland. The bike boulevards, in addition to serving their purpose for moving traffic, are also turning into Neighborhood Greenways with the help of Portland’s innovative planners and community.

Posted on 01. Nov, 2010 by Melanie Colavito.
Streetfilms is currently running a video series titled Fixing the Great Mistake. The series seeks to examine what forces led to autocentric development in U.S. cities and what the means for us and our lives today. The series is absolutely fascinating, and I’ve posted the first two films – Autocentric Development & Revisiting Donald Appleyard’s Livable Streets – below. Enjoy!

Bicycle Delivery Helps Solve Local Hunger
Posted on 29. Oct, 2010 by Melanie Colavito.
In Portland, Oregon, a bicycle delivery business called B-Line is helping to solve a local hunger problem using bicycles. In the United States, there is often a great deal of food surplus that ends up in landfills instead of on the plates of hungry people. However, food banks often don’t have the time or resources to collect any of this food. Therefore, B-Line is stepping in as the middle man to find the surplus food and deliver it to people who need it, all the while doing so in a carbon-free way! Learn more in the video below.

High School Bike Bus
Posted on 25. Oct, 2010 by Melanie Colavito.
In Orlando, Florida, a group of high school students are coming together to form a high school bike bus each morning. The students ride in formation to school together, and based on all of their comments, it is a really good experience for them. I posted about this student bike bus about a year ago, but I liked to share the story again, as the video below has some great commentary from the students about their experience. Enjoy!
