Moving Beyond the Automobile: Car Sharing
Posted on 02. Mar, 2011 by Melanie Colavito.
The third film in the Moving Beyond the Automobile series by Streetfilms is all about car sharing. Car sharing is a very simple and very brilliant concept: short term car rentals for local use where you pay to use a car by the hour or by the day. Although this isn’t “beyond the automobile” per say, it is still a great way to reduce car use and the need to own cars for many people. I would say car sharing is a step in the right direction to reduce our automobile dependency, because let’s admit it, sometimes you just need to use a car, so here is a great option for those times when you do.

Here is a good video for your weekend viewing pleasure. This video is a great hip hop music video made by a group of Kenyan youth as a submission to the 1 Minute To Save The World contest. The video encourages bicycles as a earth and people friendly mode of transportation. And the beat is downright catchy! Enjoy!

Moving Beyond the Automobile: Bicycling
Posted on 23. Feb, 2011 by Melanie Colavito.
Here is the second part of the Moving Beyond the Automobile series from Streetfilms. This video features bicycling and the benefits it can provide from personal health to traffic reduction to community and neighborhood improvement and much more. There are some really interesting statistics about the benefits of cycling. For example, the major of Portland states that the extensive bicycling infrastructure in that city cost about as much as one mile of freeway. Wow! I am definitely looking forward to the rest of the Moving Beyond the Automobile series.

Cycling & the Media in the Netherlands
Posted on 17. Feb, 2011 by Melanie Colavito.
The following video is absolutely remarkable and you should take five minutes to watch it. It is remarkable because a reckless driving incident that injured and seriously endangered a group of cyclists created a serious public outcry and response. It is remarkable because anyone thought to care about the cyclists…if you live in the U.S., or probably anywhere but the Netherlands and maybe Denmark, you know what I mean. It is remarkable because anyone, media and public alike, cared for so long. I guess it goes to show that cyclists matter in the Netherlands. The media coverage sure proves that. I have to say, that sure seems nice.

Moving Beyond the Automobile Series
Posted on 15. Feb, 2011 by Melanie Colavito.
Streetfilms has a new series called Moving Beyond the Automobile, which will be a ten part series about the many ways in which different groups, agencies, individuals, and more are working together to create strategies to reduce our reliance on the automobile. The first of the series came out today and focuses on Transit-Oriented Development. Although this series does not focus specifically on utility cycling, it has many important implications, as a reduction in automobile use can be very favorable to cycling in all forms. So we hope you enjoy the first in the series, which focuses on developing dense urban areas around transportation cores to reduce car usage.

Bike Church Tool Cooperative
Posted on 07. Feb, 2011 by Melanie Colavito.
Last week, Ted over at Commute by Bike suggested I check out this cool video of the Bike Church Tool Cooperative. The Bike Church is based out of Santa Cruz and is part of the Santa Cruz Hub for Sustainable Transportation. The Bike Church is a DIY bicycle repair center that enables people from all walks of life to learn to work on their own bicycles. It reminds me a lot of BICAS, which is a bike salvage and recycling organization here in Tucson, AZ. It’s great to see videos of organizations like this, as they provide a great venue through which to learn about and become comfortable with bicycles and riding. Enjoy!

Riding in the Winter
Posted on 26. Jan, 2011 by Melanie Colavito.
Streetfilms latest film is dedicated to the fine art of winter cycling. The film gives some great tips for how to dress (and not overdress) appropriately for winter riding. Appropriate gear can vary a lot by the conditions, temperature, etc., but the video gives a great starting point to work from. And more importantly, it emphasizes the importance of preparing mentally…although, you’ll probably find that it’s not as hard as you thought it might be!

Youth Bike Summit
Posted on 23. Jan, 2011 by Melanie Colavito.
Streetfilms has a new film out about the Youth Bike Summit, which recently took place in New York City. According to Streetfilms:
The first ever Youth Bike Summit brought bicycle advocates of all ages together last weekend in New York City. Organizations from Tucson to Boston participated in the three day summit, attending workshops, presentations, and finding inspiration in their peers.
As a resident of Tucson, I thoroughly enjoyed reading some great insights from two young Tucson riders who went to the Youth Bike Summit. You can find their comments and insight at Tucson Velo. The video includes some great excerpts from the summit and commentary from both youth and adults who attended the event. It looks like a great start to getting youth more involved in cycling and issues around cycling. Enjoy!
